Habonim Dror ANZ celebrates 75 years

This year Habonim Dror Aotearoa New Zealand is celebrating its 75 Year birthday!

Habonim Dror Aotearoa New Zealand is one of two Jewish youth movements in NZ and the only socialist zionist youth movement in NZ. Habonim Dror ANZ is part of the global Habonim Dror Movement. Their main aim is to informally educate Jewish youth about their Judaism, as many of them do not have much connection to their background due to the very small population of Jewish people in New Zealand.

There are around fifteen leaders of the movement, aged between 18 - 23 years old, who volunteer their time to organise cool activities and education for kids who are between 8-17 years old. They run activities for Jewish youth most Sundays and have two big camps a year, Summer and Winter.

Turning 75 is a massive milestone for Habo ANZ and the Jewish community of Aotearoa New Zealand. The celebration represents 75 years of education, machanot (camps), education, Shnat (Israel gap year programs) and memories for many of New Zealand’s Jewish Community.

Celebrations began last year with the launch of a 75 year fundraising campaign, to raise funds for our ongoing activities for youth. The main highlight of the campaign has been an Auckland quiz night in October last year.

You can still donate to the campaign by heading to www.charidy.com/hdanz

This year celebrations commence with a 75 year birthday event in Wellington on the 21st of May. This is an in-person event and will also be accessible on Zoom for those that are unable to make it in person.

Following on from the Wellington event, there will be a National HDANZ 75 Year birthday event in Auckland which will be held either late October or early/mid November, (date will be announced soon). The Habonim team hopes that Habonimiks and bogrimot (past Habo mads) will be able to attend from all areas of the globe.

The celebrations will then conclude with an annual visitors day at Summer camp.
