Jewish Lives goes Live!

Jewish Lives goes Live!

The Jewish Lives website was launched in April 2021. We were absolutely delighted that so many could attend and celebrate with us.

An introduction by the Chair of Trustees, Roger Moses, outlined the aims of the website, which are to provide a platform for people to learn about the contribution made by Jews to New Zealand, increase tolerance and understanding, and combat anti-Semitism.

The theme of the Jewish Lives website is 'past-present-future'.

Past:

We have taken over the Jewish Online Museum site, which has some amazing content on it, and we will be retaining much of that work. It focuses on our past, our history. It is important that we know our history because it gives us a sense of who we are. It gives us roots and context. It helps to create a sense of belonging. We can look to history and learn for the present.

Present:

The site is also about helping to strengthen the community of the present, to bring the community together by sharing information about what is going on in the wider community and things that are of interest and affect us, by sharing current stories about people, by understanding more about the community and helping non-Jewish people to understand more about the community, to promote tolerance and understanding.

Future:

It is only by building and sharing that sense of community, and by building resilience, that we will be able to create a future for the community. It is also about getting younger people interested in being part of that community. To feel that they are a part of something bigger. We intend to be the ‘go to’ website for those who want to know what’s happening in the community.  For that, we will also need your help.

We have received a lot of positive feedback for the project and would like to extend our thanks for the messages of support sent by many.  It is great to see so many people showing interest and we look forward to your continued feedback, and hope that people will be encouraged to share their stories with us.  If you would like to support us, you may find the details here.

In the meantime, we hope you will enjoy seeing the photos of the occasion: https://galleries.perrytrotter.com/launcheventjewishlivesinnewzealand/
